Selfish Thoughts May 16th 2008

SELFISH THOUGHTS
i dont see that sparkle in your eyes
just a dull glare
i miss dancing in the living room
or the way you used to look at me... with intent
it's no longer there
your confident and infectious walk
has been replaced with uneasy footing
i want to feel your strong arms around me
that make me feel so safe
instead of cautious reminders...not to cause any pain
i miss looking at your legs
that were much bigger than mine
i remember laughing till i cried
now there are far fewer laughs
but yet i still cry
i, selfishly, don't want our future
to be based on a calendar...
since their scenic pages are flipped far too fast

A new Journey

Embraced in the promising arms of the sun
a woman of years...
a new journey's begun
Reclined in her new found confidence
she tosses her hair...
caressed by gentle breezes
of life in the air
Inhaling her dreams...
and exhaling inhibitions...
discovering her true self
she had held back...
so many years ...
it seems

A day at the Beach with My Best Friends

I can see why we love going to the beach together. Our day starts with the slightest rumblings of Jo Ellen starting coffee and making some sort of breakfast for us all. We laugh and talk as we sit around the table that has everything on it, from makeup mirrors, enough food to feed 10 homeless people, various garments and make up items. As the caffeine starts taking effect we go through our morning routine… brushing our teeth, rubbing on sun tan lotion, sorting through enough clothes to last a month in most any climate, search for a television channel or a radio station to serve as a background for our carefree conversations as we start our mission…to pack for a day at the beach.
It always starts off the same…“ok…lets “consolidate” so we aren’t loaded down like pack mules”. We actually think that one day we will succeed at this…but this is what we typically end up with.
1 or 2 beach umbrellas, 1 beach chair per person, 2 beach towels per person, the radio…and lets not forget the cooler. We are talking about carrying a cooler to the beach that weighs at least 30 lbs. It is usually stocked with real Coke for Jo Ellen, Diet Cokes for Karen and me, beer for Jo Ellen, some sort of alcoholic beverages that are cleverly disguised in water bottles (we have actually mastered this technique and feel very proud of the places we have managed to sneak this in to). Of course we have some sort of “beachy fruit like” concoction to mix with the alcohol…we have even been known to whip up a blender of pina coladas or mudslides and pack that in. We’ll have our water spray bottle so we don’t have to move when we get hot at the beach, a couple of rags to wipe our hands off with, some left over Krystals for “you know who” that have sat out on the counter overnight, and perhaps a few sandwiches or some fruit.
We each will carry a beach bag….fully loaded. Sun tan oils (a 2, a 4, an 8, a 15 or 30, and the glittery stuff), lip balms, lipstick, brush, hats, pistachios, chips, magazines, books, cookies, cups, beach pillows (except for mine…I can never find it).
We are now ready to load all of the above into the car to drive across the street and unload it and haul it to the beach. We actually have also mastered this…most of the time we can get it in one load. Oh…it isn’t pretty. We usually stop about 3-4 times and “shift” our goods before we even get to the beach.
At the end of the walkway…at the sands edge…we then decide where we are going to “camp” all day. We are very particular about a few rules that determine our best spot. Close is nice…but that never happens (even as early as we get out there), it must be near the water, and it will not be next to any families that have a child or children under the age of 16 years old. Inevitably, before the day is out we will have a stray family sitting next to us for a while...but with Karen and Jo Ellen’s stares and sneers at the children who kick sand on our towels or run around or feed birds…they usually don’t stay too long.
We then set up our perfect beach haven for the day. Yes sir, anything we want is at hand for we have hauled everything that we can possibly use to our site. We get something to drink and strategically place our chairs to get the right angle on the sun’s rays…and we are at peace with the world.
We spend our day watching people strolling down the beach…guessing their age, analyzing what kind of lives they lead, and critiquing their swimwear…figures…hairstyles…all in good fun.
We talk about everything under the sun…our loved ones, jazzercise routines, gross stuff, our hopes, our fears, our dreams, our successes, our failures, our lives. We read, we nap, we go for a dip, we snack, we mix another drink, we sit in silence…feeling the warmth of the sun on our faces and the breeze from the Gulf on our skin…and all is good.
We have all talked about how fortunate we are to share the close friendship we have…how three completely different women can be so “in tune” with each other and mesh together so well.
I look forward to many more years with wonderful days at the beach with my two best friends in the world.
